Gypsy to open FHSU theatre season

This year the Fort Hays State University theatre season will kick off with the musical Gypsy.

" We wanted something that was going to have a large cast, that musically was something we could do and that was going to have a recognizable name," said Michael Hogwood, instructor of communication studies. "Gypsy is a very famous show and it gives us an opportunity to cast a lot of different people."

" While the title suggests that the musical is about the famous stripper," said Hogwood, "It is really about her hard-driven, determined stage mother, Mama Rose."

According to Hogwood, in the beginning Rose concentrates on her talented younger daughter, June, leaving Louise out in the cold. When June tires of being cute and runs away, Rose turns to Louise instead.

" Louise eventually does become Gypsy," Hogwood said, "and Rose is left by herself, her aspirations for her kids realized, but her own showbiz aspirations still unrealized."

The show will include such musical numbers as: "You'll never get away from me," "Everything's coming up roses," and "Together wherever we go."

The musical will run Oct. 1-3 and Oct. 8-10. Friday and Saturday showings will start at 8 p.m. and the Sunday shows Oct. 3 and 10 will be at 2:30 p.m.
