Merkels establish scholarship fund at FHSU

Earl D. Merkel, M.D., and his wife, Kathleen, have established the Earl D. and Kathleen A. Merkel Scholarship Fund with the Fort Hays State University Endowment Association.

The scholarship will provide tuition assistance for FHSU students, with a preference to graduates of a Russell County high school, who demonstrate financial need and academic promise.

A 1953 chemistry graduate of the university, Dr. Merkel has maintained a family practice in Russell, KS, for more than four decades. Kathleen, who graduated from St. Anthony School of Nursing, enjoys volunteering in her spare time.

There are two children in the Merkel family, Errol Merkel and Tiffany Merkel Rinke.
