Separate workshops, one on taxes for small businesses and another on taxes on contractors, will be offered in Colby, Hays and Great Bend in February by Fort Hays State University's Small Business Development Center.
Both workshops will be on the same day in each location.
The Small Business Tax Workshop will clarify important topics that can be time consuming and often confusing for many owners of small businesses. This workshop is being presented by the Taxpayer Education Unit of the Kansas Department of Revenue. This presentation will cover several topics relating to Kansas withholding tax (withholding and filing requirements, responsibilities and forms) and the Kansas sales tax (retailer's sales tax, retailers' compensating use tax, consumers' compensating use tax, goods and services subject to sales tax, record keeping and purchases with exemption certificates).
Topics covered in the Contractors Tax Workshop are commercial and remodeling projects, sales tax on materials, taxable and exempt labor and project exemption certificates. The SBDC and the Kansas Department of Revenue are jointly sponsoring this special tax session because of the differences in the way tax regulations apply to contractors.
The contractors workshop will also feature a special guest presentation on safety issues by Kansas Department of Health and Environment safety consultants.
The workshop schedule:
