State record set at 2003 FHSU High Plains Rally

Although cloudy conditions slightly hindered some cars, the 2003 Fort Hays State University High Plains Rally proved successful, with one school setting a state record.

In the experimental class, Mulvane and Ulysses tied for first with 83 laps each. In the standard class, North Platte, NE, took first place with 105 laps, which also broke the state record for most laps on a quarter-mile track. The Team Spirit Award went to Ulysses.

According to Joe Chretien, assistant professor of technology studies, the race was an overall success with only a few minor glitches.

"It was a little cloudy during the experimental race, which caused some problems with their solar panels, but all in all, I think it went very well."

Midwest Energy Inc., Sunflower Electric Power Corp., Western Cooperative Electric Association Inc. and Pioneer Electric Cooperative Inc. sponsored the race.
