Several Fort Hays State University students have been chosen to represent the university at special events as Anderson VIP Student Ambassadors for 2003-04 academic year.
This group of 24 FHSU students act as hosts and hostesses for special guests at official university events, most of which are hosted by President Edward H. Hammond.
A student ambassador group has existed at FHSU for many years, but, when President Hammond arrived in 1987, he and his former wife, Viv, formalized and reorganized the group.
Lisa Karlin, advisor to the Anderson VIP Student Ambassadors, said, "Currently, student ambassadors go through a formal application and interview process. They must have completed at least one year of college, be full-time undergraduate students with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 and have strong communication skills, an outgoing personality and a desire to serve in a volunteer capacity."
The group of student ambassadors acquired its formal name in 1998. Karlin said the name Anderson was added in memory of FHSU alumnus Vernal N. "Andy" Anderson.
"The corporation for which he had served as president made a contribution in his name to FHSU. It had been Andy's intention before he passed away to donate money for the purpose of providing suits as the uniform and for the ambassadors to keep," said Karlin.
