Effective supervisors, teams are goals of workshops offered by SBDC

HAYS, KS Techniques for building teams and training for supervisors are parts of a workshop titled "Improving Workforce Performance" offered by the Fort Hays State University Small Business Development Center and the university's Institute of Leadership Studies.

The workshop is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, April 14, at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, 300 Sternberg Drive, Hays.

"Supervisory Training" will be the morning session, from 8:30 to 11:30. The focus is on topics of direct interest to beginning or experienced supervisors. The main goal is to explore the role of effective supervisors, including an understanding of the importance of leadership, solving problems related to supervision and positive communication.

Issues of empowerment, delegation, conflict, problem employees, discipline and influence will also be addressed.

The afternoon session will be "Successful Teambuilding" from 1:30 to 4:30. This session will provide usable ideas for participants to apply immediately. Topics for discussion include the advantages of teams and the characteristics of successful teams. The discussion then moves to the barriers to teamwork and ways to overcome those barriers.

Other topics will include team cohesion, groupthink, conflict management, conducting effective meetings, problem solving and decision making.

Actual workplace teams are encouraged to attend this session together.

Participants may attend one or both workshops.
