05/28/2003

Dr. Cheryl Duffy, director of composition in the Department of English at Fort Hays State University, was named Service-Learning Faculty Member of the Year at the April Service-Learning Institute at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

She also presented a session at the institute: "The Role of Writing in Academic Service-Learning."

Duffy has incorporated service-learning into courses at all levels, from Composition I to Advanced Composition to Theories of Rhetoric and Composition.

For example, her Advanced Composition students this spring wrote documents such as newsletters, brochures and press releases for nonprofit agencies such as the Hays Public Library, the Humane Society of the High Plains and the Lucas Area Community Theatre.
