High school and middle school students will get training in team building, goal setting, decision making, personal motivation and other areas of leadership at Fort Hays State University from June 9-13 at "Links to Leadership."
It will be hosted by the FHSU Department of Leadership Studies in conjunction with the Center for Civic Leadership.
The middle school camp, coordinated by Aaron Eaton, youth leadership coordinator, will run from June 9-10. Events will include motivational speakers, leadership training sessions, community service projects, a ropes course and an awards ceremony.
The high school camp, also coordinated by Eaton, will run from June 11-13. Events for that camp include leadership training sessions, an adventure course, community service projects, and etiquette instruction leading to a social, banquet and dance.
Keith Loy, author of the book Able to Dream Again: Helping Others to Restore Dreams & Rekindle Vision, will be a featured speaker at the camps.
"Keith will be talking about goal setting and the importance of planning and implementing a personal plan of action for your life," Eaton said.
He is from Sioux Falls, SD, and is a very popular motivational speaker for high school lyceums, banquets and college retreats. He uses music, story telling, humor and illusions to interact with young people across the Midwest.
Other speakers for the camps will be Gail Kuehl, a local businesswoman and adjunct professor in the Leadership Department, and Christie Brungardt and Jill Stafford, instructors of leadership studies at FHSU.
Last year, which was the first year the camp was held, was open only to high school students and 132 students attended. But after feedback from parents, teachers and students, a middle school camp was added this year.
Camp participants will receive a participation certificate.
The cost of the middle school camp is $80 if the application is postmarked by May 12 and $110 after that date. The high school camp costs $130 if postmarked by May 15 and $150 after that. The final deadline for applications for the middle school camp is May 30 and June 1 for the high school camp.
