Members of the Kansas Association of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages met on Saturday, April 5, for their 20th annual spring conference. The conference was hosted by Fort Hays State University's Department of Special Education/ESOL.
An annual business meeting was also held on April 5, where a name change for the organization was voted on by members. The name was changed to KATESOL/BE, which stands for bilingual educators.
"This change will allow us to advocate more effectively on behalf of newcomers from different cultures in our Kansas schools," said Dr. Robb Scott, newly elected KATESOL/BE vice president and assistant professor of special education/ESOL at FHSU.
KATESOL/BE's membership has doubled in the past year.
