Dodge City judge to be featured speaker at FHSU Philosophy Dept.'s Civil Discussions series

Fort Hays State University's Department of Philosophy is sponsoring another installment of its Civil Discussions of Controversial Issues on April 3, when the topic will be the Pledge of Allegiance.

Van Z. Hampton, District Court judge from Dodge City, will be guest speaker for the program, "The Pledge of Allegiance: Let It Be." The program begins at 7 p.m. at the Hays Public Library, 1205 Main.

Hampton will discuss the creation and purpose of the pledge, its legal history and current usage. He will also offer his considered view on the moral appropriateness of the pledge.

The first half of the meeting will be devoted to Judge Hampton's presentation and the second half will be for an open discussion.
