SBDC plans workshops on taxes
02/05/2003

Workshops on small business taxes and contractors' taxes are coming to Colby, Great Bend, Hays and Osborne from Fort Hays State University's Small Business Development Center.

The Small Business Tax Workshop will clarify important topics that can be time-consuming and confusing for many business owners. The Taxpayer Education Unit of the Kansas Department of Revenue will present educational information on Kansas income tax withholding requirements, tax responsibilities, filing requirements and form preparation.

Another section will deal with the state's retailers' sales tax, retailers' compensating use tax, consumers' compensating use tax, recordkeeping, making purchases with exemption certificates and a presentation on good and services subject to sales tax.

Session dates and times: Great Bend, Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 1-4 p.m. in the Chamber Office, 1307 Williams; Hays, Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, 3000 Sternberg Drive; Osborne, Thursday, Feb. 20, from 8-11 a.m. in the Osborne Library, 325 W. Main; Colby, Friday, Feb. 21, from 8-11 a.m. in the Chamber Office, 350 S. Range.

The registration fee for the Tax Workshop is $25 if paid by Feb. 12. Late registration is $40.

The Contractors' Tax Workshop is jointly sponsored by the Department of Revenue and the SBDC. This special tax session was organized because of the differences in the way tax regulations apply to contractors. The workshop will cover commercial and remodeling projects, sales tax on materials, taxable and exempt labor, project exemption certificates and construction for farmers.

Session dates and times: Great Bend, Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 6-8 p.m. in the Chamber Office, 1307 Williams; Hays, Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 5-7 p.m. in the Sternberg Museum, 3000 Sternberg Drive; Osborne, Thursday, Feb. 20, from 1-3 p.m. in the Osborne Library, 325 W. Main; and Colby, Friday, Feb. 21, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. in the Chamber Office, 350 S. Range.

The registration fee is $35 if paid by Feb. 12. Late registration is $50.
