FHSU hosts Second Annual High Plains Rally
03/15/2000

Nine schools have already registered for the Second Annual Electrathon America High Plains Rally, an electric vehicle race, to be held at Gross Memorial Coliseum on the Fort Hays State University campus, on April 13.

Teams from Hays, Ulysses, Scott City, Wheatland, Concordia, Deerfield, Hanston, Medicine Lodge and South Gray High School plan to participate.

"If things go right, we'll have about twice as many as last year," said race coordinator Joe Chretien, assistant professor of technology studies at FHSU. Chretien will continue to take entries until approximately one week before the race. "We're leaving it kind of open-ended," he said, in order to accommodate a maximum number of teams.

Registration for the event will begin at 7 a.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. The race will be held on a quarter-mile race track set up in the north end of the Gross Memorial Coliseum parking lot. Vehicle inspection will begin at 8 a.m. Racers will meet with the race steward before the Novice Class Race begins at 11 a.m. At noon, the Advanced Class Race will begin. The Solar Assisted Class Race will begin at 2 p.m.

Awards will be presented at 3:30 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

This event is sponsored by the FHSU Department of Technology Studies, Sunflower Electric Power Corporation, Midwest Energy Inc., and Western Co-op Electric Association Inc.

This year's race personnel include faculty members from the Department of Technology Studies at FHSU; Randy Phillips, technology instructor at Ulysses High School; FHSU Technology Education Collegiate Association members; and personnel from Sunflower Electric and Midwest Energy.

Chretien said the event would not be possible without the help of the Hays Recreation Commission; Ellis County EMS; McDonald's; the University Police Department; the FHSU Athletic Department; the FHSU Grounds Department; the staff at Gross Memorial Coliseum; the Physical Plant and the sponsoring companies.

The rain date for this event is April 14. For more information, contact Chretien at (785) 628-4314.
