HAYS, KS -- The Fort Hays State University Community Drive kicked off March 15. Eighty-four volunteers from the business community will call on fellow community members to raise money for FHSU athletic programs, scholarships, departmental activities and university projects. The goal for the 2001 Community Drive is $195,000.
The drive has provided valuable support for FHSU for 20 years. Many scholarships would not exist without community support. Every academic department on the FHSU campus benefits from private gifts because they can fund more scholarships, purchase additional equipment for classroom instruction and provide professional development opportunities for faculty.
Leaders for this year's drive are Bob Helm, Midwest Energy, as chair and Stan Dreiling, James Motor Company, as vice-chair.
"As a member of the business community, I believe it is important to support FHSU. Your gift comes back to you in the services, commerce and opportunities Fort Hays State offers our community," said Helm.
Team captains for the drive are Tom Spicer, FHSU athletic director; Glenn Staab, Landmark Realty; Kelly Ellner-Leiker, Dean Ellner Realty; Gary Timken, James Motor Company; Mary Sprenkel, Kansas Medical Society; Sharon Dreher, Midwest Energy; Gary Wentling, Emprise Bank; Ron Legleiter, Hays Travel & Tours; Tim Werth, VSR Financial Services; and John Pyle, Pyle Insurance.
"It is great when our community, through their pledges to the university, show the students who come here that we care about them and their education," said Dreiling.
The Community Fund Drive 2001 concludes April 27 with an appreciation party for community volunteers.
