Fort Hays State University's Memorial Union will be the site of a pre-inaugural ceremony featuring Governor-elect Kathleen Sebelius from 2-4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10, in the union's Fort Hays Ballroom.
Sebelius has planned six pre-inaugural ceremonies throughout Kansas for Jan. 10 and 11. The other cities are Garden City, Wichita, Salina, Kansas City and Pittsburg.
The university's Center for Teaching Excellence and Learning Technology will broadcast live video of the Hays event through Internet Protocol Television to the campuses of Colby Community College, Barton County Community College, Seward County Community College, Pratt County Community College and Dodge City Community College. Moore will later speak individually to the sites over the IPTV transmission.
Sebelius has appointed Ellis County Democratic Chair Glenn Staab and his wife, Dottie, who is the textbook manager for the University Bookstore, to co-chair the event, which is free and open to the public.
The doors will open at 1:30 for seating. The Hays High School Jazz Band under the direction of Craig Manteuffel will provide entertainment. The Thomas More Prep-Marian High School Ambassadors will assist attendees with seating and directions.
Sebelius and Lt. Gov.-elect John Moore are scheduled to arrive at 2 p.m.
"This will be a regional pre-inauguration ceremony of inclusion, open to anyone and everyone," said Glenn Staab. "Our goal is to have as many people meet our new governor and lieutenant governor as possible."
The ceremony will feature remarks by Sebelius and Moore and will include an honor guard of veterans of the U.S. armed forces and a performance by the Norton High School Choir. The governor-elect's husband, Gary, is a graduate of Norton High School.
A contingent of the Kansas National Guard will post the colors and local and state law enforcement and emergency services personnel will be honored.
A receiving line and refreshments will follow remarks by Sebelius and Moore. They are scheduled to leave for Wichita at 4 p.m.
There will be no admission fee. The ceremony is being funded totally by area sponsors.
