A very well-liked and dynamic young alumni of the Fort Hays State University Department of Information Networking and Telecommunications is being memorialized through a scholarship established through the FHSU Endowment Association.
Matthew Schamberger, a 2000 graduate from the INT department, died in an automobile accident in San Antonio, TX, on Nov. 26, 2004. In his memory, a scholarship fund has been established by INT faculty and Schamberger's family. The Matthew Schamberger Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to INT majors with a minimum 3.0 grade point average who have exhibited leadership in student organizations and activities.
According to Mark Bannister, chair of the INT Department, Schamberger was a standout student and young leader within the department.
" He was the first networker/telecom person to join the National Broadcast Society. He was one of the co-founders of the Advanced Technology Student Organization and the organization's first president," said Bannister.
" He initiated and helped to plan the very popular annual trips to Denver and Kansas City. He participated in service activities and represented INT students on Student Senate. And he was a nice guy who could charm the socks off of anyone," he said.
" To help current and future students understand the positive impact that Matt had on others, we are seeking to create an endowed scholarship that will be awarded annually to an upper division student based upon leadership in one or more INT-sponsored student organizations."
Endowing the Matthew Schamberger Memorial Scholarship fund will mean raising a minimum of $10,000 over the next three years and that money will be invested by the FHSU Endowment Association, with the proceeds made available each year thereafter to award to INT students. Several memorial contributions have already been made by Schamberger's family and friends, and as a further step in that fundraising, Bannister has coordinated a direct mail appeal to alumni and friends of the department asking for their support of the fund.
Gifts to the fund be accepted any time at the Endowment Association; the sooner the fund reaches $10,000, the sooner the first scholarships will be awarded.
