University Police Officer Elden Klaus earns Certificate of Excellence for actions in fall semester

University Police Officer Elden E. Klaus, Fort Hays State University, was awarded the FHSU University Police Certificate of Excellence on Jan. 10 for "exemplary actions undertaken as an officer for the Fort Hays State University Police Department."

University Police Director Ed Howell said the award was based on Klaus' handling of three situations during the fall 2004 semester.

On Oct. 16, Klaus halted a burglary in progress at the Grab and Go in the university's Memorial Union, while the building was closed, and made an immediate arrest in the incident.

On Oct. 20, Klaus arrested a man who was window peeping and trespassing on the second floor ledge of McMindes Hall, a residence hall on campus.

Then, on Dec. 4, Klaus stopped a vandalism at McMindes Hall.

Howell said that all three actions stopped crimes in progress.

" Officer Klaus was commended for his valiant efforts to provide a safer community at Fort Hays State University," said Howell.
