Area students come to celebrate, participate in FHSU's Silver Anniversary Math Relays
11/04/2002

Fort Hays State University's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is hosting its 25th Annual Math Relays on Thursday, Nov. 14.

The annual event brings more than 1,600 students from more than 70 high schools to the FHSU campus to compete in various mathematical competitions.

The MACS Department, formally the Mathematics Department, began the relays in 1978 with 553 students from 34 high schools. Since then the day has evolved into a statewide event bringing students from eastern and western Kansas.

"Every year the relays keep surprising us," said Mary Kay Schippers, instructor of mathematics and computer science. "It is really exciting to see where all the participants travel from and how widely the competition's reputation has spread."

As in past years, the competition includes six events. Based on school division and grade level students participate in six categories: using number sense; trigonometry; algebraic manipulations; informal geometry, measurement; applications of algebra, arithmetic; and calculations with calculators.

The announcement of winners and trophy presentation will be at 2 p.m. Plaques will be awarded to the top three schools in each division. Medals will be awarded to the top three individuals in each category in each respective division. Ribbons will be awarded to fourth through 10th positions in each individual event in each division.

"The relays are an excellent opportunity for high school students to academically compete with students from across the state," said Schippers. "It is also a great opportunity for the teachers to network and compare notes with other teachers."
