FHSU debate team triumphs in Oklahoma
11/19/2002

Two members of the Fort Hays State University debate team won a recent competition at the University of Central Oklahoma.

The FHSU team of Paul Mabrey, Manhattan junior, and Michael Richardson, Hutchinson freshman, prevailed over 35 teams in order to win the tournament. Mabrey also won top individual speaker honors out of more than 70 debaters.

"Paul and Michael did almost everything one could hope from a debate tournament," said Dr. William Shanahan, debate coach and assistant professor of communication.

Mabrey and Richardson were fourth after the prelims, losing to two teams, but managed to overcome all of their opposition in the semi-finals and finals.

"We are psyched about this tournament, since it was a large district tournament that tends to be more conservative," said Shanahan. "Paul and Michael brought a lot of judges to the Fort's side."
