FHSU debate team travels to Malibu

Recently two members of the Fort Hays State University debate team attended a competition at Pepperdine in Malibu, CA.

With more than 50 teams competing, the FHSU team of Paul Mabrey, Manhattan junior, and Brent Saindon, 13214 Castlewood Road, Wichita senior, tied for third place. In the preliminary rounds FHSU went 5-1, losing only to the Berkeley, the eventual winner.

"As always, it feels good to compete against such academically outstanding universities," said Dr. William Shanahan, debate coach and assistant professor of communication.

FHSU was seeded fourth after the preliminary rounds, defeating three more teams but losing to USC in the semi-finals.

"Both FHSU and this USC team advance extremely radical arguments and argument styles," said Shanahan. "The judges took a while to decide and had a tough time choosing between such challenging advocacies."

"Over the years FHSU has experienced a lot of 'West Coast love,' including our big win at Fullerton's nationals last year," said Shanahan. "We are eagerly anticipating our semester-break return, and not just for the beautiful weather."
