FHSU Encore Series to feature Kansas City jazz musicians Interstring with Karrin Allyson
02/14/2000

HAYS, KS - Four of Kansas City's elite jazz musicians will team up with a world renowned jazz vocalist and pianist on Wednesday, Feb. 23, to heat up Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center with some cool jazz.

The performance begins at 8 p.m. on the Fort Hays State University campus as a part of the Encore Series.

Karrin Allyson, who has been compared to jazz giants Ella Fitzgerald and Shirley Horn, joins Interstring, a highly charged, improvisational jazz quartet for the evening of jazz. Allyson and Interstring often tour and record together.

With a wide range of music and a highly energetic and innovative sound, Interstring is sure to please both staunch jazz enthusiasts and novices as well. Songs come from the performers' own interpretations of everything from jazz standards to bluegrass and Brazilian flavored originals. An undercurrent of the bass and drums with an ability to change meter and dynamics in an instant keeps the music flowing.

Group members include Bob Bowman, bass; Todd Strait, drums; Danny Embrey, electric guitar; and Rod Fleeman, acoustic guitar.

The quartet was formed by Bowman who said the group is focused on the music. "We're all rhythm players and are comfortable in the role of accompanying. We're not that concerned with one person sticking out and are willing to sacrifice for the group."

Allyson has just released her sixth recording on the Concord Jazz label, titled From Paris to Rio. She has performed live concerts on the west coast from Seattle to Los Angeles and in Boston, Washington, DC, Chicago, Minneapolis and New York City. Her credits also include performances abroad in Brazil, Paris, London and Japan.

Her concert hall work includes a series of engagements with the Kansas City Symphony, a touring engagement with Broadway Swings, including an evening at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, as well as an appearance at the Ella Fitzgerald Tribute in New York's Carnegie Hall.

Tickets for the performance are available at the Student Service Center in the Memorial Union on the FHSU campus or can be charged by phone at (785) 628-5306. Ticket prices for reserved seating are general public, $9; senior citizens and under 18, $7; FHSU students, $5. Unreserved seats are $5, $3, and $1, respectively.
