Rodgers & Hammerstein's timeless classic South Pacific opens for a one-night only performance at FHSU's Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Oct. 27.
South Pacific is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel Tales of the South Pacific by James Michener and was a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for drama. The play comes to campus as part of the FHSU Encore Series.
Oklahoma!, Roger & Hammerstein's first musical, was followed by Carousel, Allegro and South Pacific. These musicals led to many Tony, Grammy and Academy awards and established the duo as the most consistently profitable partnership in American musical theatre.
South Pacific, a memorable tale of a May-December war-time romance on an island paradise, is considered by many to be one of the best musicals ever written. The romance between French planter Emile de Becque and Nellie Forbush, a young American nurse, features unforgettable songs such as "Some Enchanted Evening," " I'm Gonna' Wash that Man Right Out of My Hair," "There is Nothing Like a Dame" and "Bali Ha'I."
The play is produced by Troika Entertainment, which is in its third decade of producing touring shows throughout the world.
