FHSU's Dorn chosen as Chemistry Olympiad mentor
05/06/2002

Dr. Loretta Dorn, associate professor of chemistry at Fort Hays State University, has been chosen as a U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad Mentor by the American Chemical Society.

One of only three such mentors in the country, Dorn will spend two weeks in the summer of 2003 at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, working with 20 promising high school chemistry students to prepare them for the national competition.

In addition to working at the study camp, during the summers of 2004 and 2005 Dorn will accompany the two national winners to the International Chemistry Olympiad, where she will serve as a judge for the competition.

Dorn said she was interested in serving as a mentor because of her outstanding experiences living and working with gifted high school students at the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences during her undergraduate career.

"Working with gifted students is really exhilarating," she said. "It's hard work, but it's very rewarding."
