Seven students in the Media Studies division of the Department of Information Networking and Telecommunications at Fort Hays State University have been notified by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters that they have won top awards in the 2006 Student Broadcast competition, including one first-place award.
"The Red Zone," a 15-minute sports show on KFHS-TV, the campus television station, won first place in the category of Complete Sports Feature in the statewide competition. Results were announced April 5.
Students who created the broadcast, and who will be honored by the KAB, are hosts Joel Ewy, Jetmore senior, and Cole Reif, Great Bend sophomore, sports reporter Zach Scruggs, Sachse, TX, junior, and production assistants Addie Warner, Hutchinson senior, Brandon Billinger, Ulysses junior, and Jennifer Montenegro, Wichita junior.
Also honored, with a second-place finish in the category of Station Promotion Announcement, was senior Casey McAvoy, Offerle senior, who produced a 30-second public service announcement on KFHS-TV letting the audience know of the station change from Channel 13 to Channel 67 on Eagle Cable in Hays.
All seven Fort Hays State University students will be honored at a KAB luncheon in Topeka on April 12. A total of 10 state universities and high schools competed in various categories, which were judged by media and educational professionals from out of state.
