FHSU Department of Music to present opera, The Mikado
01/24/2000

HAYS, KS -- Fort Hays State University Department of Music will present "The Mikado" in Felten-Start Theatre on Jan. 27, 28 and 29 at 8 p.m. each evening.

"The Mikado," a Gilbert & Sullivan opera, is a satire of English class structure set in 19th century Japan.

The story centers on Nanki-Poo (Trenton Green, Ellinwood senior), son of The Mikado, emperor of Japan (James Geist, Hays freshman). The emperor is set to marry Katisha, an elderly lady (Amber Marrs, Montezuma senior) but wishes to marry Yum-Yum (Jill Siefkes, Hudson senior). Meanwhile, Ko-Ko, lord high executioner of Titipu (Jacob Steward, Hays senior) is intent on marrying Yum-Yum.

Other characters include Pooh-Bah, a high lord (Jason Haag, Hays senior); Pish-Tush, a noble lord (Joshua Brandt, Wichita senior); Pitti-Sing (Shannon Demuth, Hays sophomore) and Peep-Bo (Alisha Erwin, Great Bend freshman), wards of Ko-Ko. A 20-member chorus and a 22-member orchestra round out the production.

The opera, which was the first in the city of Hays, has been performed all over the globe. Nothing is sacred in the production as everything from rank and station to capital punishment are jeered and compromised.

The chorus plays a large part in the ensemble work, supporting the main characters and affording comical moments of their own in the process.

The production is being directed by Dr. Rager Moore, interim chair of the Department of Music. Scenic and technical design are being done by Bruce Bardwell, assistant professor of communication and costume design is being put together by Tomme Lynn Williams, instructor of communication.

Tickets for the performance went on sale at the Student Service Center in the Memorial Union on the FHSU campus on Monday, Jan. 24th. Cost for reserved seating is $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.
