FHSU brings "The King and I" to Hays

The story of Anna and the king of Siam has never been so popular. With the animated musical version coming out last year and the movie "Anna and the King" in theaters, lovers of this classic story will have a unique chance to see it live.

The national tour of the hit Broadway musical "The King and I" will play at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2, in the Fort Hays State University Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. This production will feature Rodgers and Hammersteins most enchanting score brought to life.

Set in the 1860s, "The King and I" is the tale of Anna Leonowens, an English school teacher, who travels to the royal palace in Bangkok to teach the 7 children of the king of Siam. The two cultures clash, but Anna and the king learn more from each other than they might have ever imagined.

In 1951, the original production won five Tony Awards including Best Musical. The 1996 Broadway revival of "The King and I" received four. This production also received the 1996 Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical Revival.

The composers Rodgers and Hammerstein worked together on nine stage musicals from "Oklahoma!" to "The Sound of Music." They also worked together on one original movie musical, "State Fair," and one TV musical, "Cinderella." The Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals have earned 26 Tony Awards, 15 Academy Awards, 2 Pulitzer Prizes and 2 Grammy Awards.

According to Carol Brock, coordinator of special events, "The Fort Hays State University Special Events Committee and Big League Theatricals are proud to bring this elegant production of The King and I to Hays."
