Mark Colwell, Hays senior majoring in political science at Fort Hays State University, was selected as a representative to the Model United States House of Representatives for the First Congressional District of Kansas from April 17-21.

The inaugural year of the Model House of Representatives was announced by the American Youth Scholarship Foundation to draw one student from each congressional district to Capitol Hill for a simulation of the U.S. House of Representatives.

"I look forward to networking with young men and women across the country and exploring issues that our country faces today and will likely face tomorrow," said Colwell.

Colwell will take part in writing and voting on bills and hearings in the committee rooms of the U.S. House of Representatives. Events are to be hosted by the Republican National Committee, Democratic National Committee and other prominent organizations.

"Serving as a student representative in the U.S. Model House of Representatives is a great opportunity for college students across the country to learn about policy making, relationship building and negotiation skills within the walls of Congress, " said Aurelia Figueroa, executive director of the American Youth Scholarship Foundation and founder of the Model House of Representatives program.
