FHSU's free online tutoring service adds subjects
02/01/2006

Students are now able to receive tutoring in an extended range of subject areas with the additions of Introductory Finance and Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology to Fort Hays State University's online tutoring service, Smarthinking.

FHSU partnered with Smarthinking, a Web site offering online tutoring and academic support, in 2002 to offer free online tutoring to FHSU students. It supplements FHSU's existing Academic Success Program and Writing Center services by offering online tutoring and homework help at all hours.

Finance and anatomy and physiology were added to basic math, calculus II, statistics, writing, accounting, macro and microeconomics, chemistry, biology, physics and Spanish.

"Students enrolled in Smarthinking most often need help with math and writing," said Dr. Patricia Griffin, director of academic advising and career exploration. "But there is a high demand for tutoring in finance and anatomy and physiology, so this addition should benefit more students."
Smarthinking's online tutors, or e-structors, are graduate students, college faculty, high school teachers and retired educators from across the country. Students may choose to work with e-structors during live tutoring hours, submit writing to the Online Writing Lab, schedule online appointments with e-structors or use the online study resources.

The Academic Success Program and the Writing Center at FHSU provide more options for students. The Academic Success Program provides free subject area tutoring for most general education courses. It also helps students develop study skills, test-taking skills, time management skills and control over test anxiety. The Writing Center offers students free individual instruction in all aspects of writing.
