Fort Hays State University's Safe Ride reached its 3,000th ride in November, providing FHSU students and members of the Hays community with transportation.
According to Robert Duffy, coordinator of drug alcohol wellness network, "Safe Ride is not only for FHSU students leaving the bar, but it is for anyone in the community worried about getting home safely."
Representing a community-wide partnership, Safe Ride has received ample donations from local residents, President Edward Hammond of FHSU, the Hays Police Department, Nex-Tech and many other community donations.
"Nex-Tech supplies us with over $1,000 a year of phone service, and the Hays Police Department donates the difference in the cost of underage drinking tickets of what they used to be in order to help fund Safe Ride," said Duffy.
"The program has been an unbelievable success and has helped avoid many fatal accidents," said Duffy.
"It is mind-blowing at how many people have taken advantage of the program," said Duffy.
Safe Ride is accessible from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights and can be reached by calling (785) 621-2580.
