04/11/2002

HAYS, KS -- The Educational Development Center at Fort Hays State University will present nationally recognized speaker Jim Trelease from 7-8:30 p.m., Monday, April 15, in the Fort Hays Ballroom.

The evening performance will highlight unique techniques available to parents on reading aloud to their children.

Trelease lectures throughout North America. He addresses parents and teachers on the subjects of children, literature and television. His lectures cite dozens of suitable books for reading to children as well as demonstrate simple techniques involved in the activity of reading aloud.

He was an award-winning artist and writer for a daily newspaper in New England for 20 years. During this time, he visited hundreds of classrooms as a school volunteer talking with students about the joys of reading. Those visits, combined with his nightly reading to his own two children, became the inspiration for his national best seller The Read-Aloud Handbook.

This program is open to any community members, parents, teachers, FHSU faculty and students. For more information contact the Fort Hays Educational Development Center at (785) 628-4382.
