HAYS, KS -- The Fort Hays State University rodeo team competed in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association at Garden City Community College this past weekend, April 19-21.
The team set the stage for the upcoming 37th Annual FHSU Rodeo, beginning this Friday, April 26, and running through Sunday, April 28.
Matt Jarvis, Phillipsburg senior, went into the GCCC rodeo ranked second in the regional standings in bull riding. Jarvis had a successful weekend, scoring a 78 for fifth place in the long round, but was unable to score any points during the short go-round and ended up in third place and only 55 points away from the championship title. Jarvis is already qualified for the championship series playoffs, but has a goal of acquiring the bull riding championship.
Colter Dent, Brookville senior, took second place in the long run of the steer wrestling at the GCCC rodeo but split third and fourth in the short round and placed third in the average. With the points attained from this past weekend's rodeo, Dent is positioned in 14th place and only needs 28 points at the upcoming FHSU rodeo to qualify for the playoffs.
Larry Phillips, Jetmore freshman, is currently ranked 22nd in steer wrestling in the regional standings but was unable to place in the steer wrestling at GCCC. Although Phillips did not place in the steer wrestling, he placed fourth in calf roping in the long round and then placed fifth in the short round, putting him fifth in the average and in 18th place overall with a good chance of qualifying for the playoffs during the FHSU rodeo.
Braden Stueve, 2001 playoff and College Nationals Final Rodeo qualifier, placed ninth in the long round of team roping with partner Wade Hudspeath, Oklahoma State University. Stueve and Hudspeath placed fourth in the short round and tied for fourth in the average. Stueve and partner will have to score a minimum of 30 points at the FHSU rodeo to have any chance to qualify for the championship playoff series.
