Puerto Rican ballet company closes out Encore Series

HAYS, KS -- The Encore Series at Fort Hays State University was one of a select group of Midwest arts presenters chosen to receive a Heartland Arts Fund grant.

This award will support a performance by Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico at the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, April 17, at 8 p.m. This will be the final Encore Series event for the 2001-2002 year.

Members of the company will also be involved in a lecture/demonstration for elementary school students while in Hays.

The Heartland Arts Fund, a joint venture of regional arts organizations, including Arts Midwest and Mid-America Arts Alliance, serves a 15-state region and helps presenters of music, theatre, opera and dance bring in professional artists from outside their home states.

Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico is the leading Hispanic classical ballet company in the United States. The company was dubbed "one of Puerto Rico's best kept secrets" by the New York Times after its mainland debut in 1990.

Ballet Concierto was founded in 1978 by former ballerina Lolita San Miguel.

While in Hays, Ballet Concierto will perform Latinissimo and Carmen. Carmen was choreographed by Miami City Ballet's Jimmy Gamonet de los Heros and tells the story of a gypsy factory worker and the consequence of her love for two different men.

Latinissimo is a ballet concept created by Hispanic choreographers and Latin American and Caribbean composers, including Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias and Ricky Martin.

Tickets for the performance went on sale Monday, April 1, at the Student Service
Center in the FHSU Memorial Union, (785) 628-5306. Reserved tickets are $16 for the
general public, $14 for senior citizens and children under 18, and $12 for FHSU students.

Unreserved tickets will be $12, $10 and $7 respectively. In addition to the performance by Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico, the special events committee will be announcing the line-up for the 2002-03 Encore Series on April 17.
