04/30/2002

HAYS, KS -- Several staff members of The University Leader, the Fort Hays State University campus newspaper, and the Reveille, the FHSU yearbook, attended the Kansas Associated Collegiate Press Conference April 19-20 in Wichita.

Attending the session was Linn Ann Huntington, associate professor of communication and Leader adviser; Mark Bowers, Wichita graduate student and Reveille adviser; Trent Rose, Oakley senior; Kelland Wolf, Hays freshman; Sarah Wolf, Hays sophomore; and Kristen Martinez, Oxford senior.

"I was very proud of my colleagues at the Leader as we came home with 24 of 97 possible awards," said Wolf. "The competition was tough as we faced metropolitan colleges such as K-State and Wichita State, but good things come in small packages. It's always good to know that our newspaper is one of the highest-ranking publications within the state of Kansas."

"The weekend also was very informative," said Martinez. "I think that those staff members who attended the breakout session learned some valuable ideas that they will use to help improve the paper."

The Leader and Reveille each brought home a bronze medal.

"KACP is a great learning experience," Rose said. "We get critiques from professional journalists, attend sessions created to help improve the quality of our paper, and get to interact with other student journalists."
