HAYS, KS -- Thirty-eight area high school students had the opportunity to explore a career in nursing Feb. 20-21 at the first-ever Nightingale Experience co-sponsored by Fort Hays State University's Department of Nursing and the Hays Medical Center.
The event was aimed at high school sophomores and juniors interested in the field of nursing. Participants heard lectures on nursing as a career and observed clinical practice at the Hays Medical Center; they also conversed with members of the Fort Hays Association of Nursing Students and the Nursing Christian Fellowship.
They also got a taste of life at FHSU by attending an Encore Series event, visiting the Sternberg Museum of Natural History and spending the night in the FHSU residence halls.
"Overall, the feedback was very, very positive," said Dianna Koerner, coordinator of undergraduate nursing studies. "We had some students who want to come back next year."
Koerner said the Nursing Department plans to make this an annual event, provided that continued funding is available. Major funding for the Nightingale Experience came from the Hays Medical Center Foundation, which provided a $3,800 grant to initiate the event this year.
Generous sponsorship by area hospitals covered room and board, materials and event admission, so students attending were responsible only for their travel expenses. The students are listed below by their sponsoring hospitals.
