HAYS, KS -- As part of Fort Hays State University's Encore Series of Performing Arts, I Musici de Montreal will perform a chamber music repertoire ranging from baroque to 20th-century works on Sunday, March 3, at 3 p.m. in FHSU's Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.
Tickets for the performance are on sale now at the Student Service Center in the Memorial Union and may be charged by phone at (785) 628-5306. Reserved tickets are $22 for the general public, $20 for senior citizens and children under age 18, and $18 for FHSU students. Unreserved tickets are $18 for the general public, $16 for senior citizens/under 18 and $14 for FHSU students.
Cellist Yuli Turovsky will direct the performance, which features guest piano soloist Anton Kuerti. The concert will include performances of Mozart's Symphony No. 15 in G major and Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major, as well as Coups d-archets, a piece specially composed by Denis Gougeon for I Musici de Montreal's 15th anniversary in 1999.
Second only to the Montreal Symphony as the largest musical organization in Montreal, I Musici de Montreal has toured extensively in Canada and abroad since its formation in 1984. The chamber orchestra has recorded 27 compact discs distributed by Chandos Records in 50 countries around the world.
I Musici de Montreal has received many accolades, including Best Chamber Ensemble of the Year from the Canadian Council of Music. The Penguin Guide to Compact Discs and Cassettes (1992) awarded a rosette for the CD of Handel's Concerti Grossi, calling it a recording of "special illumination, magic." Most recently, I Musici de Montreal won a Juno (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy) for Best Classical Album of 1996 in the Large Ensemble category for its recording of Ginastera, Villa-Lobos and Evangelista.
