FHSU to hold college political debate

Fort Hays State University College Republicans and Democrats will debate current political issues from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, in the Memorial Union's Black and Gold room.

The debate is part of a project for his American Political Parties class led by Dr. Chapman Rackaway, assistant professor of political science. Rackaway challenged his class to plan a project that would help spark recognition and awareness of the recently re-established organizations. The class has recruited over 30 other students to participate.

"The event is part of an effort to revitalize the campus party organizations," said Rackaway. "They were close to dormant, but the students seem very passionate about getting involved and have worked hard to recruit new members."

Rackaway will advise the Republicans while Dr. Shala Bannister, associate professor of political science, will lead the Democrats. Each group is made up of 20 students who have submitted 10 questions each. They have viewed each other's questions and prepared for the point-counterpoint style debate. They also must respond to four wild-card questions, and questions from members of the audience.

Admission is free. For more information contact Rackaway at crackawa@fhsu.edu or call (785) 628-5391.
