HAYS, KS Calamity Jane will ride into Fort Hays State University's Forsyth Library on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 1 p.m.

FHSU students, faculty, staff and the public are invited to the free performance by Dr. Joyce Thierer, a part-time history faculty member at Emporia State University. Thierer portrays Calamity Jane (Martha Jane Cannary), one of the western frontier's best known women.

During the performance, Calamity Jane interacts with audience members while letting them know about the past and how she helped to create her own myth in the 19th century.

Thierer has portrayed the frontier woman for nine years through a historic performance touring troupe called Ride into History. The troupe uses drama to engage people in history.

This presentation is part of the library's open house, the first event in an effort to build a "Friends of the Library" chapter for Forsyth Library.

Friends of the Library is an association of volunteers dedicated to supporting the library and raising funds for library improvements.
